Godly Priorities

How is your life ordered?

Godly Priorities

Anchored in Matthew 6:33 and Ephesians 5:15 to 17

In a world filled with noise, deadlines, distractions, and endless demands, the question is not whether we have priorities. The question is whether our priorities are Godly. Scripture brings clarity to what truly matters.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says in the ESV, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” This command comes in the middle of His teaching about anxiety over food, clothing, and daily needs. Christ does not deny that these things matter. He corrects the order. The problem is not that we care about daily provisions. The problem is that we often place them above the Kingdom.

To seek first the Kingdom of God means that our highest aim is the glory of God and submission to the reign of Christ in every area of life. It means our thoughts, time, finances, relationships, and decisions are governed by His Word. His righteousness becomes our pursuit. Not a self-made righteousness, but the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ and is worked out in obedience.

This aligns perfectly with Ephesians 5:15 to 17, where Paul writes, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Godly priorities require intentional living. We are not drifting through life. We are walking carefully.

Notice the connection. Jesus tells us what to seek first. Paul tells us how to walk wisely. Both point to intentional, Christ-centered living. Time is not neutral. The days are evil. Distractions are constant. The flesh pulls us toward comfort, reputation, and security. But the Spirit calls us toward obedience, holiness, and faithfulness.

From a Reformed perspective, we understand that even our desire to seek God first is a work of grace. Left to ourselves, we would seek our own kingdom. Total depravity means our natural priority is self. But God, in His sovereign mercy, regenerates the heart and gives new affections. Because of Christ’s finished work, we are not striving to earn favor. We are responding to grace already given.

Godly priorities also reflect trust in God’s providence. When Jesus says that all these things will be added to you, He calls us to rest in the Father’s care. The same sovereign God who ordains the end also ordains the means. As we pursue His Kingdom, He faithfully provides what we truly need.

Practically, this means asking hard questions. Does my schedule reflect that Christ is first? Do my spending habits reveal eternal priorities? Am I growing in holiness? Am I redeeming time for prayer, the Word, and fellowship with the saints? Or am I consumed with temporary concerns?

Godly priorities do not happen accidentally. They flow from a heart transformed by the Gospel. When we see the surpassing worth of Christ, lesser things fall into their proper place. We stop living for what is fading and begin living for what is eternal.

Seeking first the Kingdom is not a one-time decision. It is a daily surrender. It is waking up each morning and saying, Lord, Your will be done in my life today. Teach me to walk wisely. Teach me to use my time for Your glory. Order my steps according to Your Word.

When Christ is first, everything else finds its rightful place.

We always encourage everyone to check everything through the lens of the Scriptures, just as the noble Bereans did in Acts of the Apostles. Please visit us here for much more, and remember, Christ is enough.

Let us walk together in service to our Lord and God and until we meet again...lets go serve our King!
