His sheep know His voice and come...

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

John 10:1-16 - June 7th, 2026

Sermon - Pastor Scott Thompson

In John 10:1-16, Jesus uses the familiar imagery of a shepherd and his sheep to reveal deep truths about His identity and His relationship with His people. This passage follows closely after the healing of the blind man in John 9, where the religious leaders demonstrated their spiritual blindness by rejecting Christ. Jesus contrasts those false shepherds with Himself, the true Shepherd sent by God.

Jesus begins by describing how a shepherd enters through the door of the sheepfold while thieves and robbers try to enter another way. The sheep recognize the shepherd's voice and willingly follow him because they know him. In the same way, God's people hear the voice of Christ through His Word and are drawn to Him. This is not merely an invitation but a picture of God's saving work. Those whom the Father has given to the Son will hear His voice and follow Him.

Jesus then makes one of His great "I Am" statements: "I am the door of the sheep" (John 10:7, ESV). Through Christ alone, sinners find salvation, safety, and spiritual nourishment. There is no other entrance into the kingdom of God. This truth stands against every false religion and every attempt at self-righteousness. Salvation is found in Christ alone.

The contrast becomes even clearer in verse 10: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly" (ESV). False teachers, false religions, and worldly philosophies ultimately lead people away from God and toward destruction. Jesus, however, came to give abundant life. This does not mean earthly wealth or freedom from hardship. Rather, it is the fullness of life found in reconciliation with God, forgiveness of sins, peace with the Lord, and the promise of eternal life.

In verse 11, Jesus declares, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." Unlike a hired hand who flees when danger approaches, Jesus willingly sacrifices Himself for His flock. These words point directly to the cross. Christ did not die as a helpless victim of circumstances. He willingly laid down His life to save His people from their sins.

This shepherding language echoes the Old Testament. In Psalm 23, the Lord is described as the Shepherd of His people. In Ezekiel 34, God condemns the false shepherds of Israel and promises that He Himself will come and shepherd His flock. Jesus fulfills that promise. By claiming to be the Good Shepherd, He is identifying Himself with the Lord who shepherds His people throughout Scripture.

Jesus also speaks of the intimate relationship He has with His sheep: "I know My own and My own know Me" (John 10:14, ESV). This is not a casual acquaintance but a covenant relationship grounded in God's love and grace. Believers know Christ because He first knew them. Their security rests not in the strength of their faith but in the faithfulness of their Shepherd.

Finally, Jesus reveals the global scope of His mission. He says, "And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also" (John 10:16, ESV). While His earthly ministry was centered among Israel, His saving work would extend to people from every tribe, tongue, and nation. Through the Gospel, Christ continues to gather His sheep into one flock under one Shepherd.

John 10:1-16 reminds us that Jesus is the only Savior, the faithful Shepherd, and the One who willingly laid down His life for His sheep. In a world filled with competing voices, believers can rest confidently in the voice of the Good Shepherd, knowing that He leads, protects, and preserves His flock forever.

We always encourage everyone to check everything through the lens of the Scriptures. Be like the noble Bereans of Paul's day. Please visit us here for much more, and remember, Christ is enough.

As we listen to the noise around us day by day, let us focus on the one voice that matters, our Lord Jesus Christ and follow Him.  Until we meet again brothers and sisters, lets go serve our King!
