Continuation from last week, He lays down His life...

The Good Shepherd's Sacrifice and Secure Promise

Scripture - John 10:17-30 (Cont.)

June 14th, 2026 - Pastor Scott Thompson

In John 10:17-30 (ESV), Jesus continues revealing His identity as the Good Shepherd. These verses move beyond His care for His sheep and focus on the purpose of His mission, the authority He possesses, and the eternal security He gives to all who belong to Him.

Jesus begins by saying, "For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again" (John 10:17). The cross was not a tragic accident or an unexpected turn of events. Jesus willingly laid down His life according to the eternal plan of God. His death was a deliberate act of love and obedience.

He makes this clear in verse 18: "No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord." Though sinful men would arrest, condemn, and crucify Him, they did not ultimately take His life from Him. Jesus willingly offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for sin. At the same time, He declares His authority over death itself, saying, "I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again."

These words point directly to His resurrection. Jesus is not merely a victim of injustice. He is the sovereign Son of God who possesses power over life and death. His resurrection would vindicate His claims and secure salvation for His people.

As Jesus speaks these truths, division arises among the people. Some accuse Him of being demon-possessed, while others recognize that His words and works cannot be explained away so easily. The healing of the blind man in the previous chapter served as undeniable evidence that God was at work through Him.

Later, during the Feast of Dedication, the Jewish leaders confront Jesus and demand a direct answer about whether He is the Christ. Jesus responds that He has already told them, but they do not believe because they are not among His sheep (John 10:26).

This statement highlights a profound truth: faith in Christ is not merely an intellectual decision. Those who belong to Him hear His voice and follow Him because they are His sheep. Jesus says, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27).

The Good Shepherd knows His sheep personally and intimately. He calls them to Himself, and they respond in faith. Their security does not rest on the strength of their grip on Christ, but on His faithful hold on them.

Jesus gives one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture: "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand" (John 10:28). Eternal life is not earned or maintained by human effort. It is a gift given by Christ Himself.

Jesus further strengthens this promise by declaring that His Father, who is greater than all, holds His sheep securely as well. No power in heaven or on earth can separate believers from the love and protection of God.

Finally, Jesus makes a staggering declaration: "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30). He is not claiming to be the same Person as the Father, but He is affirming His unity with the Father in essence, power, and purpose. This statement is a clear declaration of His deity.

The Good Shepherd willingly laid down His life, victoriously took it up again, and eternally secures all who belong to Him. Because Jesus is truly God, His promises are certain, His sacrifice is sufficient, and His sheep can rest securely in His hands.

We always encourage everyone to check everything through the lens of the Scriptures. Be like the noble Bereans of Paul's day, who examined the Scriptures daily to see if these things were true. Please visit us here for much more, and remember, Christ is enough.

We want to thank our brothers and sisters in Christ all the way in from Gordo, Alabama this week as hey taught VBS, fellowshipped, and were a shining example of Christ.  We pray the Lord continue His great work through all of you and you are invited back to Faith Recovery Fellowship any time!

Brothers and Sisters, until we meet again, let us go serve our King...in season and out of season, for He is with us.
