Eternal Life, do you know Him?

Today is the day of Salvation!

Eternal Life, Eternal Love, Christ Alone

(John 3:16-21)

Few verses in Scripture shine as brightly as John 3:16. It has been called the “Gospel in a nutshell,” for in it we find the heart of God’s redeeming love revealed in Christ. Yet the surrounding verses (17–21) expand and clarify what this love means, who it is for, and how humanity responds to it.

The Love of God Displayed (v.16)
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” This is not a sentimental or shallow love, but a sovereign, sacrificial love. God gave His one and only Son, sending Him into a world that was not neutral but rebellious and hostile to Him. This was not because the world was worthy, but because God is merciful. Salvation is not achieved by human effort or moral reform, but by faith in the Son. To believe in Him is to trust Him fully, resting in His finished work.

The Purpose of His Coming (v.17)
Christ did not come into the world to condemn it, for condemnation already rested on sinful mankind. He came to save. The Father’s purpose in sending the Son was redemption, not immediate judgment. Yet this salvation is only found in Him.

The Reality of Unbelief (v.18)
John makes it clear: “Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already.” Condemnation is not merely a future possibility; it is a present reality for all outside of Christ. By nature, all are under wrath (Ephesians 2:3). Belief in Christ delivers us from that state, but unbelief leaves one exactly where they stand, guilty before a holy God.

The Reason for Unbelief (vv.19–20)
Why do people refuse to believe? Because they love darkness rather than light. The problem is not intellectual but moral. Sin darkens the heart, and people resist the light because it exposes them. Christ’s perfect righteousness reveals human sinfulness, and apart from grace, people would rather cling to their sin than come to the Savior. This shows the depth of depravity in mankind.

The Fruit of Belief (v.21)
Those who do come to the light do so because God has worked in them. Their deeds reflect that God has acted upon their heart. This is evidence of sovereign grace. No one drifts into the light on their own, but the Father draws, the Spirit regenerates, and the Son saves. Believers live in such a way that it becomes clear their new life is “carried out in God.”

Conclusion
John 3:16–21 presents both the freeness of the Gospel and the seriousness of unbelief. God’s love in Christ is offered to all, yet only those who believe have eternal life. Those who reject Him remain under condemnation, not because God failed to provide, but because they loved darkness more than light. Salvation is of the Lord, from start to finish, and it is to His glory that sinners are brought into the light of Christ.
