Pray and spend time with God

John 6:15-21

In John 6:15 to 21 we read of a moment that reveals the sovereign authority of Christ over both the hearts of men and the created world. After the feeding of the five thousand the crowd wanted to take Jesus by force in order to make Him king. They wanted a political ruler not a suffering Savior. Their desires were shaped by earthly expectations rather than by the perfect will of God. So Jesus withdrew to the mountain by Himself. This demonstrates that no human plan can redirect the mission of Christ. He came to do the will of His Father and nothing would stop Him.

The disciples then set out across the Sea of Galilee. It was dark and Jesus had not yet come to them. A strong wind arose and the sea became rough. This is a picture of the believer in a fallen world. We often feel the winds of affliction and the waves of uncertainty. The disciples were experienced fishermen but their strength and skill could not calm the storm. We must see the clear truth that salvation, deliverance, and perseverance do not rest in man. They rest in the power and grace of the Lord.

When Jesus came to them walking on the sea they were frightened. Jesus said It is I do not be afraid. The phrase It is I recalls the divine name revealed to Moses in Exodus. It points to the eternal deity of Christ. He is not only Lord over bread and fish. He is Lord over nature, time, and space. The Creator walks upon His creation with complete power and authority. This encourages our hearts because the same Christ who fed the multitude now steps into the darkest storm with words of comfort and assurance.

The disciples were glad to take Him into the boat. Immediately the boat reached the shore at the place they were going. This shows the perfect timing and provision of Christ. They did not achieve safety on their own. When Christ came near they arrived where He intended. The sovereign grace of God brings His people safely to the destination He has chosen. The believer can trust that Jesus will not abandon His own. He will come in His perfect time. He will speak peace to fearful hearts. He will bring His children to the shores of everlasting life.

We learn that Christ does not bend to human agendas. He accomplishes the divine decree set from all eternity. The crowds could not make Him king by force. The storm could not keep Him from His disciples. Nothing stands above the will of our Lord. This passage calls us to surrender earthly expectations and trust the One who rules all things by the word of His power. When we walk through storms we look not to ourselves but to Christ who says It is I do not be afraid.

We always encourage everyone to check everything through the lens of the Scriptures. Be like the noble Bereans of Paul's day. Please visit us here for much more, and remember, Christ is enough.

Until we meet again, lets go serve our King!
