The Bread of Life
Seek the Bread of Life, who is Christ our Lord.
The Bread That Truly Satisfies
John 6:22 to 35
In John 6:22 to 35, the crowd that had been fed the previous day goes searching for Jesus. They had eaten their fill of bread, yet their hunger quickly returned. What unfolds is not merely a conversation about food, but a revelation of the true condition of the human heart and the sovereign grace of Christ.
The people pursue Jesus across the sea, not because they understood the sign He performed, but because their stomachs had been filled. Jesus exposes their motives plainly. “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves” (John 6:26, ESV). Their desire was earthly satisfaction, not spiritual truth. This is a picture of fallen humanity, always seeking God for what He can provide rather than for who He is.
Jesus then directs them to labor not for perishable food, but for the food that endures to eternal life. This food is not earned by human effort. It is given by the Son of Man, the One upon whom the Father has set His seal. Salvation is rooted in divine initiative, not human work. Even the command to believe is grounded in grace.
When the crowd asks what works God requires, Jesus answers with stunning simplicity. “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent” (John 6:29, ESV). Faith itself is not a meritorious act. It is the result of God’s work in the heart. The crowd, however, still demands another sign, revealing their unbelief. They appeal to Moses and the manna in the wilderness, failing to see that the true Bread from heaven now stands before them.
Jesus corrects their misunderstanding. It was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven, but God. And now the Father gives the true Bread, the One who gives life to the world. This Bread is not something to be gathered daily. He is a Person. Jesus declares, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to Me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35, ESV).
This is one of the great “I am” statements of John’s Gospel. Jesus identifies Himself as the sole source of eternal life. All human attempts at satisfaction apart from Him will fail. Only Christ satisfies the deepest hunger of the soul. To come to Him is to believe. To believe is to receive life that never fades.
This passage confronts us with a vital question. Are we seeking Christ for temporal benefits, or are we coming to Him as the Bread of Life? True faith rests not in signs, experiences, or provisions, but in the Person and work of Jesus Christ alone. He is sufficient. He is sovereign. He is the Bread that truly satisfies.
