Behold the Lamb of God!
He takes away the sin of the world!
Behold the Lamb of God (John 1:29-34)
In John 1:29-34 we see one of the most profound declarations in all of Scripture. John the Baptist, seeing Jesus coming toward him, cries out, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” This statement not only identifies Jesus but also reveals the very heart of His mission.
The Jewish people would have immediately recognized the significance of calling Jesus the “Lamb of God.” From the sacrifices in the temple to the Passover lamb in Exodus 12, the lamb was a symbol of substitution, atonement, and deliverance. Every lamb that was slain under the Old Covenant pointed forward to the true Lamb who would come, not to cover sin temporarily, but to take it away fully and finally. Jesus Christ is that Lamb, the One chosen by the Father before the foundation of the world to bear the wrath we deserved.
John the Baptist confesses that he himself did not fully know Jesus at first, but God revealed His identity. He recalls how he saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove and remain on Him. This was the clear sign given by God. Unlike the prophets and priests of old who were temporarily empowered by the Spirit, Jesus is the One upon whom the Spirit rests without measure. He is the anointed One, the Christ, fully equipped for His mission of redemption.
John’s testimony in verse 34 is climactic: “I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” The Baptist’s entire ministry was built around preparing the way for Christ, and now he bears witness publicly. Jesus is not merely a teacher, a prophet, or a moral example. He is the Son of God, the Lamb who takes away sin, and the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
For us, this passage is a call to look upon Christ with the eyes of faith. The command is simple but life-changing: “Behold.” To behold Christ is to see Him as the only sufficient Savior, the One who bore our guilt and shame at the cross. It is to rest in His finished work and to confess with John that there is no other hope for forgiveness and eternal life.
This also shapes how we live as believers. If Christ has truly taken away our sin, then we no longer stand condemned. We walk in freedom, not because of our works, but because the Lamb has secured our redemption. And just as John bore witness to Christ, so too are we called to point others to Him, urging them to behold the Lamb of God who alone can save.
John 1:29-34 shows us the glory of Christ revealed at the very beginning of His ministry. Before He ever performed a miracle or preached a sermon to the crowds, His identity was declared clearly. He is the Lamb of God and the Son of God. To behold Him is to find life everlasting.
We always encourage everyone to check everything through the lens of the Scriptures. Be like the noble Bereans of Paul's day, checking the scriptures to see that what is preached is true.
