Jesus is the Light

Follow Him, and walk no more in darkness...

Walking in the Light of Christ

May 17th, 2026 - John 8:12, Ephesians 3:9-12

Sermon - Pastor Scott Thompson

In John 8:12, Jesus makes one of the clearest declarations of who He is:

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12, ESV)

These words were spoken during the Feast of Booths, a time when massive lamps were lit in Jerusalem to remember how God led Israel through the wilderness by a pillar of fire. Against that backdrop, Jesus stood before the people and essentially declared that He Himself is the true Light, the fulfillment of what those lamps symbolized. He was not merely pointing people toward truth. He was proclaiming that truth, salvation, and life are found in Him alone.

The imagery of light throughout Scripture points to God's holiness, truth, and revelation. Darkness represents sin, confusion, and spiritual blindness. Humanity apart from Christ walks in darkness, unable to save itself or truly understand the things of God. Yet Jesus says that whoever follows Him “will not walk in darkness.” Notice the certainty of His words. He does not say they might find light or could escape darkness. Those who truly follow Him will have “the light of life.”

This ties beautifully into Ephesians 3:9-12, where Paul speaks of the mystery of salvation that had been hidden for ages but has now been revealed in Christ:

“And to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known...” (Ephesians 3:9-10, ESV)

Paul says this mystery has been “brought to light.” The phrase is significant because Christ, the Light of the world, is the One who reveals what was once hidden. The mystery is that salvation through Christ extends not only to the Jews but also to the Gentiles, bringing together one people under the Lordship of Christ. What was concealed in shadow throughout the Old Testament has now been illuminated in Jesus.

John 8:12 shows us who the Light is, while Ephesians 3 explains what that Light reveals. Christ shines into a dark world and reveals God's eternal plan of redemption. Through His death and resurrection, sinners are reconciled to God, and through the church, God's wisdom is displayed to the world.

Ephesians 3:12 gives believers tremendous comfort:

“In whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in Him.” (ESV)

Because Jesus is the Light of the world, believers no longer stumble in spiritual darkness or remain separated from God. Through Christ, we have access to the Father with confidence. The darkness of guilt, fear, and separation has been overcome by the saving work of Jesus Christ.

The question for every person is this: Are you following the Light? Many admire Jesus from a distance, but Christ calls people to follow Him. To follow Jesus means trusting Him, obeying Him, and resting in Him alone for salvation. Apart from Him there is darkness, but in Him there is life everlasting.

The world offers many false lights that promise hope, meaning, and truth, yet all eventually fade. Jesus alone is the true Light of the world, and those who belong to Him will never be left in darkness.

We always encourage everyone to check everything through the lens of the Scriptures. Be like the noble Bereans of Paul's day. Please visit us here for much more, and remember, Christ is enough.

Let us walk together in the light, following Christ our Lord.  Too often people will proclaim their love for the cross...yet refuse to carry it daily.  Knowing Jesus, we can pick up our cross.

Until we meet again, lets go serve our King!
