Abiding in Christ

John 15:1-15 - September 13th, 2026

In John 15:1-15, Jesus gives us one of the clearest pictures in Scripture of what it means to belong to Him and live as His disciple. He says, “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.” Jesus is not simply giving His disciples a lesson about plants. He is explaining the source of spiritual life and the absolute necessity of remaining in Him.

Jesus says that every branch that does not bear fruit is taken away, while the branch that bears fruit is pruned so that it may bear more fruit. He then tells His disciples, “Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.” The fruit of the Christian life does not come from human effort alone. It comes from the life of Christ working through those who belong to Him.

Jesus makes this unmistakably clear when He says, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.”

A branch has no life of its own apart from the vine. It cannot produce fruit by trying harder. Its life comes from its connection to the vine. In the same way, Christians cannot produce genuine spiritual fruit apart from Christ. We need Him every moment.

This also reminds us that salvation is entirely dependent upon Christ. We do not save ourselves, and we do not sustain ourselves spiritually through our own strength. God is the One who gives life, and Christ is the One through whom that life comes. Those who truly belong to Christ will bear fruit because His life is at work in them.

Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches.” He then gives a promise that should encourage every believer: “Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

Notice the final words. Jesus does not say that apart from Him we can do very little. He says we can do nothing. Every good work, every act of obedience, every expression of genuine love and every bit of spiritual fruit depends upon Christ.

Jesus then connects abiding in Him with obedience. “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love.” Obedience is not the way we earn Christ’s love. Rather, obedience is the evidence of a life that has been transformed by His grace. The believer who loves Christ desires to follow His Word.

Jesus also says, “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” Christian love is not merely an emotion or a feeling. Christ demonstrated His love by laying down His life for His people. He calls His followers to display that same selfless love toward one another.

Jesus goes even further by calling His disciples friends. He says, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.” That statement reminds us that our relationship with Christ begins with His gracious choice, not ours. We are not the authors of our salvation. Christ chooses, calls, gives life, and appoints His people to bear fruit.

This passage gives us a simple but profound picture of the Christian life. Christ is the vine, we are the branches, and the Father is the vinedresser. Our responsibility is to abide in Christ, listen to His Word, obey His commands, love others, and bear fruit. But even as we do these things, we must remember that the strength to do them comes from Christ Himself.

The question is not whether we can live the Christian life in our own strength. We cannot. The question is whether we are abiding in Christ. Apart from Him, we have no spiritual life and no ability to produce the fruit God desires.

Christ is enough. He is the source of our life, the source of our strength, and the One who produces lasting fruit in His people.
