Standing Firm in a Hostile World

In John 15:18-27, Jesus prepares His disciples for something they would rather not hear. He tells them that the world will hate them because it has hated Him first. Following Christ does not mean we will always be accepted, understood, or welcomed by the world. Jesus makes it clear that there will be opposition because His followers no longer belong to the world in the same way they once did.

Jesus says, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you” (John 15:18, ESV). The Christian should not be surprised when faithfulness to Christ brings resistance. Our calling is not to win the approval of the world, but to remain faithful to Christ.

This is where 2 Corinthians 10 gives us an important reminder. Paul tells us that “the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4, ESV). Our battle is not ultimately won through human strength, clever arguments, or worldly methods. God gives His people spiritual weapons, and our responsibility is to bring our thoughts and lives into submission to Christ.

That begins with the condition of our hearts.

Psalm 51:10 gives us the prayer we should continually bring before God: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” (ESV). When we face opposition, the answer is not to become bitter, angry, or consumed with proving ourselves right. We need God to continually search our hearts, cleanse us, and renew our spirits.

Hebrews 10:22 points us toward the same dependence upon God: “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water” (ESV). When the world pushes against us, we need to draw nearer to Christ, not farther away.

And 1 John 1 reminds us that walking with Christ does not mean pretending that we have no sin. Instead, it means walking in the light. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8, ESV). But John immediately gives us the hope of the Gospel: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9, ESV).

This is important when considering the hatred and opposition Jesus describes in John 15. We are called to stand firmly for the truth, but we must also continually examine our own hearts. We cannot faithfully confront the darkness while refusing to allow God to expose the darkness within us.

Jesus tells His disciples that the world will oppose them because they belong to Him. Yet He also reminds them that they are witnesses. The Holy Spirit would testify about Christ, and they would testify as well because they had been with Him from the beginning.

That remains our calling. We do not respond to a hostile world by becoming like the world. We respond by remaining in Christ, walking in the light, keeping our hearts clean before God, and proclaiming the truth of the Gospel.

The world may reject Christ, but Christ has not rejected His people. Therefore, when opposition comes, we stand firm, not because we are strong enough in ourselves, but because our strength and hope are found in Him.
